Surfacium  Frequently Asked Questions with Answers

  • What is an FAQ section?
An FAQ section can be used to quickly answer common questions about your business like "What are your opening hours?", or "How can I book a service?", and even "Where can I use Surface Protection Film?. Customers frequently have these types of questions for us. We gathered a list of these questions and provided answers to them here for your convenience so you are always in the know. If you don't find the answer to one of your questions here, please let us know. Can't find your answer here? Contact Us. We are happy to help.
  • What are the benefits of investing in surface protection?
The main benefit is peace of mind. With Surfacium’s coatings and films, you dramatically reduce the risk of permanent stains, etches or scratches from everyday use. Spills from wine, coffee, oil, citrus, vinegar, bleach etc. simply cannot penetrate the surface as they could on untreated stone. This makes clean-up effortless (water and soap are enough) and eliminates daily worry about damage. In high-traffic or rental properties (airbnbs, hotels, offices), it saves money by avoiding expensive stone repairs or replacements. In short, you protect your investment: surfaces look newer longer, cleaning is easier, and you avoid hassles like resealing every year. Many customers find this one-time investment pays for itself in time and stress saved.
  • What surfaces can Surfacium’s products be applied to?
Surfacium’s nano coating and protective films work on hard, non-porous surfaces throughout homes and businesses. This includes natural stones and engineered slabs (granite, quartz, marble, travertine, concrete, etc.), ceramic/porcelain tile, glass, and metals like stainless steel. They are ideal for kitchen and bath, countertops, sinks, faucets, vanities, shower glass, appliances and similar surfaces. (For safety, we do not coat slippery horizontal floors.) In short, virtually any existing hard surface in your home or commercial space can be protected.
  • How long does the protection last? Will it need reapplication?
These coatings and films are long-lasting. Surfacium’s Nano Coating permanently bonds to the surface (with lifetime warranty coverage), meaning it won’t wash off and is considered permanent. High-quality surface films are also very durable, interior-rated films typically last 10–15 years or more under normal use (Outdoor-rated versions last up to 16 years depending on conditions). Over time the finish will still protect against stains and scratches; if a film section eventually wears out, we can simply replace that piece.
  • How do I clean and maintain treated surfaces?
Cleaning is simple. Both coated and film-covered surfaces are easier to clean than untreated stone or glass. In most cases mild soap and water or a gentle, non-abrasive household cleaner is all that’s needed For example, washing with warm water and a little dish soap (or non-ammonia glass cleaner) and wiping with a soft microfiber cloth will keep the surface fresh. The applied film also makes the surface less porous, so dirt and spills wipe away easily. We recommend avoiding harsh scrubbing pads or abrasive cleaners, which aren’t needed thanks to the protective layer. Routine cleaning of grit or spills prevents normal wear over years.
  • Will the coating or film change the look or feel of my surfaces?
In general, no. Both Surfacium’s nano coating and films are optically clear and designed to be nearly invisible once applied. A matte honed stone stays matte; a glossy finish stays glossy. In fact, the nano coating often enhances the surface’s appearance, natural veins and colors pop without looking artificial. Many clients report that the surface looks like “brand new” after application. (In gloss applications, the coating can slightly boost sheen; in honed finishes it preserves the original look.) High-quality film likewise has an ultra-clear adhesive so you typically can’t see it once installed The stone’s appearance is fully preserved while gaining protection.
  • How much does this service cost?
Pricing varies by service type, surface size, and materials. Generally we charge by the square foot or linear foot of surface area. As an example, a professional countertop nano-coating for an average kitchen (counters, sink, faucet, stove) often starts around $400–$600 while protection films are quoted per square foot of stone (exact rates depend on region and timing. (Complex patterns or 3D effects in restyling films also raise cost. We encourage customers to get a free on-site estimate, this lets us measure your surfaces and give an exact quote based on the work needed. Discounts may apply for bundling multiple surfaces or returning customers.
  • How long does installation take and what should I do to prepare?
Surfacium’s experts come to you and work efficiently. A typical small job (e.g. bathroom vanity) can be done in a few hours, while a full kitchen usually takes half a day to two days. Installation time depends on surface area and complexity (e.g. many seams or tight corners). We’ll coordinate scheduling, but plan to clear off all personal items from the area beforehand. Our team will perform any needed cleaning or minor prep on-site. Once prep is done, application proceeds smoothly, for nano coating the surface is wiped and coated panel by panel, and for film we custom-cut and squeegee it in place. There’s minimal disruption: no demolition or dust, just polished surfaces at the end.
  • Are the coatings and films safe (non-toxic)?
Yes. Surfacium uses only non-toxic materials. Our nano coatings are water-based and, once cured, are food-contact safe. They contain no heavy metals or VOC fumes after curing. Similarly, the high-grade protective films are inert polyethylene polymers that won’t leach chemicals. Many products even have built-in antimicrobial layers to inhibit bacteria and mold. In short, these protections create a sanitary, hygienic surface suitable for kitchens and bathrooms. After installation you can immediately use your countertops and sinks as usual (although we advise keeping them dry for ~8 hours during initial cure).
  • Can these products be removed or repaired if needed?
Yes. The nano coating is intended as a permanent layer (not removable), while our surface films are removable. If you ever need to take off the film (for stone refinishing or replacement), it peels away cleanly without harming the countertop. Likewise, if a section of film is gouged or stained, we can cut out that segment and replace it with a new patch. Because the film is sacrificial by design, it can be renewed in just the damaged area rather than replating the entire countertop. For nano coatings, reapplication can be done during routine maintenance if ever needed, but typically the original coating lasts for a very long time.
  • Do I still need to seal or wax my stone after applying your products?
No. In fact, using Surfacium’s advanced nano coatings or films means you no longer have to apply traditional chemical sealers or waxes. Unlike liquid sealants that wear off in months, our treatments form a much stronger protective layer. Many natural stone fabricators even recommend applying a protective film instead of using sealers each year. Once Surfacium’s products are in place, they provide the stain, etch and water protection that sealers claim to offer, so you can skip the costly “resurfacing” maintenance.
  • What’s the difference between Nano Coating, Protection Film, and Re-Styling Film?
Each product has a different purpose. Nano Coating is a microscopically thin liquid polymer that bonds permanently to the surface. It provides invisible, all-over chemical and scratch resistance. Protection Film (Invisible Surface Shield) is a clear multi-layer polymer sheet ~5–6 mils thick. It acts as a sacrificial physical barrier: spills and scratches hit the film instead of your stone, and the film can later be peeled off. Re-Styling (Design) Film is a decorative adhesive premium quality vinyl used to change the look of cabinets, walls or other surfaces. It comes in thousands of wood-grain, stone, metal and color patterns and is applied like wallpaper to transform design. All three enhance and protect surfaces, but in different ways: coatings add invisible durability, protection films add an extra clear shield, and design films change appearance entirely.
  • I still have more questions and would like to provide Surfacium with my feedback.
Surfacium’s goal is to provide clear, expert answers so you feel confident choosing surface protection. If you have other questions or need details specific to your project, please contact us for a free consultation, we’re happy to explain any aspect of our process and products.
  • What is Surface Protection Film and how does it work?
This is a clear, multi-layer polymer film (about 5–6 mil thick) with advanced nano-tech coating. In use it covers your stone or tile like a clear wrap. The film has a special protective layer that resists chemicals and abrasion, so everyday acids (vinegar, wine, lemon, etc.) and spillages contact the film instead of your stone. The film takes wear and tear so your countertop doesn’t. Protect your stone counters from oils, acids, alkaline, and harsh household chemicals. Wrap it, preserve it's original look and don't need to worry any longer about urgently cleaning it off before it leaves a stain or causes any permanent damage.
  • What substances will it protect against?
pills are no problem. Coffee, red wine, citrus juice, vinegar, bleach, oils, and even harsh cleaners won’t etch or stain the stone beneath the film. Everyday soaps and detergents are safe too. The film creates a protective barrier that blocks chemical penetration. It also helps preserve the surface’s original finish by preventing dullness, small scuffs, and light scratches. Just keep in mind it’s made to guard against everyday wear, not heavy impact.
  • Is the protective film visible or does it change the look of my countertop? No, it’s nearly invisible.
The film and adhesive are optically clear and designed to blend with the stone’s finish. Once the film is applied, most people don’t even notice it. In many cases, the glossy version can slightly enhance the appearance by deepening the color and adding a bit of shine, since it fills in tiny surface pores. The matte version, on the other hand, softens glare and gives the surface a more muted, low-sheen look without hiding any detail. The natural pattern remains unchanged, so granite veins, quartz flecks, and other features still show through clearly.
  • How do I care for surfaces under the film?
Taking care of the surface is simple. Just clean the film like you would a regular countertop. For everyday messes, use a soft cloth with water or a little mild dish soap. If something dries on or gets sticky, you can use a diluted soap mix or a cleaner that’s safe for stone and film. Since the film is smoother and less porous than natural stone, dirt and soap don’t stick as easily, which makes cleaning quicker. Avoid using abrasive pads or anything gritty because they can scratch the surface. Wipe up spills when they happen and clean gently to keep everything looking its best.
  • Can I remove or replace the film?
Yes, the protective film can be removed without damaging the countertop underneath. It’s designed to act as a “shield” layer that takes the wear so your stone doesn’t have to. If the surface ever needs repair or refinishing, the film can simply be peeled away. Over time, some clients choose to replace the film as part of their long-term maintenance, often every ten years or so, depending on use and wear.
  • What is Surface Re-Styling Film?
It’s a decorative vinyl wrap used to change the appearance of surfaces without remodeling. Think of it as ultra-thin wallpaper in realistic materials. Surfacium carries patterns that mimic wood grains, marble and stone looks, concrete, metal, even textured fabrics. By applying this film, we can instantly transform cabinets, walls, countertops or other fixtures to a new style (e.g. turn a dark wood cabinet into a light oak look, or white countertop into marble. It’s the same technology used in commercial architecture, just for your home finishes and especially for commercial applications and public spaces.
  • What surfaces can I wrap with Re-Styling Film?
Any smooth, non-porous surface. Common examples include cabinet doors, drawer fronts, paneling, columns, elevator doors, glass, or metal fixtures. Even walls or countertops (if flat and sealed) can be wrapped. The film bonds best to surfaces like painted wood, laminate, metal or glass. It will not stick well to textured or dusty surfaces, so Surfacium ensures the area is clean and smooth before installation. With heat and skill, our installers can even conform the film around gentle curves.
  • How durable is the Re-Styling Film?
Very. High-end architectural films are designed for commercial use. A properly installed interior film has an expected lifespan of about 12 years or more. It’s moisture and abrasion resistant, and many films are fire-rated. You can treat it like a painted surface, it won’t peel or fade under normal conditions. (If someone grazes it with a sharp object, it can scratch, just like any painted or vinyl surface, but such damage is usually minor and can be repaired as described below.)
  • Can I use the film outdoors or on shower walls?
Standard interior films are not formulated for constant exterior weather or direct shower exposure. However, there are special exterior-rated films that withstand sunlight and weather. If you need outdoor or direct water use (like on a patio or exterior door), let us know, we can source the appropriate film. For indoor kitchens and baths, our normal films resist steam and humidity well, but we recommend wiping up heavy water (or using a vent) to prevent edges from lifting.
  • How do I clean Re-Styling Film?
Clean it like you would a painted wall or glass surface. Use a soft cloth or sponge with mild detergent water and dish soap work well. Avoid abrasive scrubbers, as they can scratch the surface. For tougher marks, a small amount of denatured alcohol can be used safely. Regular dusting helps keep it looking clean and sharp. In general, gentle cleaning with basic household products is all you need to keep the wrap looking fresh.
  • How does the nano coating protect my surfaces?
The nano coating creates a super-thin, diamond-hard shield over the surface. It chemically bonds and fills microscopic pores, making the surface stain-, scratch- and acid-resistant. Liquids simply bead up or sheet off, so coffee, wine, oil, soap scum and the like cannot soak in. This also prevents etch marks from acids (like lemon juice or vinegar) because those substances cannot reach the stone. In practice, the coated surface becomes extremely easy to clean and much more durable under daily wear.
  • What surfaces are best for nano coating?
Surfacium’s nano coatings work on almost any hard interior surface, all types of kitchen countertops (granite, marble, quartz, etc.), tile, glass, stainless steel appliances and plumbing fixtures, even sinks and shower doors. (Outdoor or floor use is generally not done because the coating can make surfaces very slick.) Our coatings are engineered for stone and smooth surfaces, so they’re perfect for countertops, vanities, kitchen backsplashes, shower walls, stair treads and other places you want protection. Soft or very porous materials (like untreated wood or fabric) need a different product; please ask us if you’re curious.
  • How long before I can use the surface after coating?
Quite soon. The nano coating is dry-to-the-touch almost immediately, though we recommend keeping the surface dry for the first 8–12 hours to allow final curing. You can use the countertop normally after that initial period. The coating reaches full hardness (chemical bond) in 2–3 days, similar to how paint or film needs a “cure” time. During this cure, avoid heavy scrubbing or heat. Once cured, you can clean and use the surface as usual, and the coating’s protection is fully active.
  • Will nano coating make cleaning and maintenance easier?
Absolutely. The coating makes the surface hydrophobic (water-repellent) and oleo phobic (oil-repellent). Water and spills bead up and slide right off, and even greasy fingerprints wipe away effortlessly. In kitchens and bathrooms this means less elbow grease: you’ll spend far less time scrubbing off soap scum or stuck-on food because the coating prevents buildup. Many customers note that, after coating, a simple wipe-down is enough to keep everything looking spotless.
  • Does the coating kill or inhibit germs and mildew?
Surfacium’s coatings include an antimicrobial formulation that helps inhibit bacteria, viruses, mold and milde. While it isn’t a substitute for normal cleaning, the coating adds an extra sanitary layer. In other words, the treated surface is easier to sanitize, germs don’t cling as readily to the ultra-smooth coating.
  • How does it hold up to heat or direct sunlight?
Ceramic nano coatings are generally heat resistant, but the exact temperature tolerance can vary depending on the product formulation. Household-grade nano coatings, especially those used on countertops, glass, or fixtures, a safe heat resistance range is typically around 300–350°F. Our nano protective coatings are mostly meant for general hygiene and to repel dirt, grime, oils and mineral build up and soap scum accumulation. We do not recommend direct flame or prolonged exposure to heat, or bursts of direct heat. The heat resistance of the coating is more about the coating not degrading, not necessarily about it protecting the surface underneath from heat damage or penetration. For example, different materials such as marble, quartz, and other natural stones react differently to heat regardless of coating.
